Utopia

They who fancy it possible to frame the institutions of the country, on the pure principles of abstract justice, as these principles exist in theories, know little of human nature, or of the restraints that are necessary to society. Abuses assail us in a thousand forms, and it is hopeless to aspire to any condition of humanity, approaching perfection. The very necessity of government at all, arises from the impossibility of controlling the passions by any other means than that of force.

COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE, The American Democrat (1838)

[B]ecause statist utopianism is both against innate human nature, and without any historical record of success, it is not inevitable. The sane can stop it by daily, no hourly, saying no to the utopian narcotic, even (or especially) in its most seemingly mundane and innocuous manifestations (Dear Mrs. Obama, those who buy expensive baby formula surely have enough money for a breast pump if they so chose, and the latest federal concern over why some women do not nurse should at least start with addressing their own thinking and attitudes, not funding someone or something to root out a third party’s supposed coercion and oppression). If we speak ‘truth’ to power and ignore the incoming salvos of “mean, greedy, selfish, privileged, racist, nativist, sexist, homophobe, Tea-bagger, and yokel”, decline can stop.

HANSON, VICTOR DAVIS, Decline is in the Mind, February 27, 2011

What has always made the state a hell on earth has been precisely that man has tried to make it his heaven.

HOLDERIN, FRIEDRICH

[U]topians...weave dreams about the perfect state. They do not realize that the state, the social apparatus of compulsion and coercion, is an institution to cope with human imperfection and that its essential function is to inflict punishment upon minorities in order to protect majorities against the detrimental consequences of certain actions.

MISES, LUDWIG VON, Human Action: A Treatise on Economics, The Epistemological Problems

Why do people continue to dance this wacky charade involving unprecedented leaps of faith and psuedo-intellectual gyrations to convince themselves and others that ObamaCare will do what Obama and his adoring minions have promised?...

Social Security = broke

Medicare = broke

Medicaid = broke

USPS = broke

Amtrak = broke
